Guideline Example
Use upper, lower or mixed case Entering DNA, dna, or Dna gives the same results.
Use wildcards to search for variants of words. Enter Test* to match Test, Tests, Testing, Tested.

Enter wom?n to search for records that contain woman, women, or womyn.

Enter col*r to match color and colour.

Separate two or more terms by the search operators AND, OR, and NOT. Enter crim* AND poverty to find records containing both crime (or criminals) and poverty.

Enter airplane* OR aircraft to find records containing either airplane (or airplanes) or aircraft (or both airplane and aircraft).

Enter internet* NOT web to find records containing network (or internet, internets, internetworking) but not the word web.

Use double quotes("") for phrase or exact author search, enclose the phrase in quotation marks. For example, the query "prostate cancer" or "John Smith"will retrieve records that contain the exact phrase prostate cancer, if phrase is given, or it will retrieve the articles authored by John Smith, if author name given.

If you enter a phrase without quotation marks, the search engine will retrieve records that contain all of the words you entered. The words may appear in the same Topic field, or they may appear in different Topic fields.

If you enter two words separated by a hyphen, period, or comma, then the term will be interpreteted as an exact phrase. For examples, the search speech-impaired will find records containing the exact phrase speech-impaired or speech impaired.

Enter "prostate cancer" to search for articles containing the phrase prostate cancer.

Enter "C N R Rao" to search for articles authored by C N R Rao.

The search prostate cancer will find records containing both words. The words may be close together, or they may appear in different fields in the same record.

Search for hyphenated and unhyphenated variants of the same term. To search for words containing the word X-ray, enter X-ray OR Xray.
